The UK’s Betrayal of the Turkish Cypriot People – 2004

Since 1960, the UK have been a guarantor power to the island of Cyprus. After relinquishing its power and allowing the formation of the bi-communal Republic of Cyprus, Britain maintained two military bases on the island.

It appears that these bases have been the sole focus when it comes to Cypriot foreign policy for the British government. All these promises made in 2004 amounted to nothing. The UK’s promise to remain neutral during the Cyprus negotiations is almost comical. There is an estimated 300,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the UK alongside 10,000 British expats in the North of Cyprus. However, the UK continues to maintain these inhumane embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot people.
